Watermelon Juice

Here's the thing. Watermelons usually taste better in my mind than in reality. Did watermelons used to be fabulous and now they are crappy? I keep buying them and I keep being disappointed. <sigh> This time I had an idea. What about making it into juice?

This watermelon tasted good. It looked good (from the outside). It smelled good. The texture was awful. Stringy? How does a watermelon get stringy? (not rhetorical if anyone knows) Juice was the next step.

So, I googled it. I mean, what else do you do, eh? And yes, it is easy, but a bit time consuming.

The Recipe

I cut up the watermelon into cubes and removed the seeds. A bit messy, but not rocket science.

Put them into the blender and added the juice from a sour orange. Here in Ecuador there are these sour oranges that are as sour as a lemon, but taste otherwise like an orange. There are lemons, too, and that is what I would have used in Canada. I did not this time have a lemon handy, that's my excuse.

Added some sugar. Probably 1/4c for each blender full... but that sure depends on the flavour already and your taste.

Blended with a bit of water. Like a couple of tablespoons "bit". Just enough so the blender works.

Strained it. Put the goop into a container and I am freezing it so we will see tomorrow if it is a delicious snack or more compost.

The juice is good warm, but better cold. The second batch is in the fridge right now as I try to resist.

Recommendation

So, if you find yourself with an otherwise inedible watermelon I highly recommend this juicing. If you have a juicing machine it is a no-brainer but even without it was just a bit time consuming.

As for buying a watermelon specifically for juicing? Maybe, if you have a machine, but a beautiful, sweet, fresh, perfect watermelon would, in my opinion, be wasted by juicing it.

Zahna - I love watermelon juice. You can actually buy in the grocery stores and they did not add 50 grams of sugar. LOL...see my writing today ...Watermelon Salad,,
