Bariatric or weight loss surgery does a better job at controlling blood sugar levels in diabetics, than the traditional pill and insulin therapy.

Possible breakthrough

The latest possible breakthrough in the research on diabetes is weight lost surgery. Doctors considered it to be a last resort attempt to defeat the disease. Now new research from Chicago is suggesting weight loss surgery should be employed much sooner.

Study on weight loss surgery and diabetes

The studied compared diabetes medications with weight loss surgery and found the surgery was more effective in bringing blood sugar levels back to normal. This is important information for the doctors who treat the millions of Americans, Canadians and of course Montrealers, who have this dreaded disease. I am also suffering from type 2 Diabetes. Diabetes can be fatal.

Dramatic increase in insulin use

Unfortunately it cannot be called a cure at this point because no one can predict if the disease will come back. So far many patients who have had this surgery have been in remission for two years so that is a positive sign.

"Every single one of the bypass patients who got to 6 or less got there without the need for any diabetes medicines. Almost half of them were on insulin at the start. That's pretty amazing," said a study co-leader, Dr. Steven Nissen, the Cleveland Clinic's cardiovascular chief.”

Well the size of the belly is the size of your fist. So you know what you eat is not based on quantity but quality of diet.
