Food as fuel

We do not expect our cars to get us very far without quality gasoline, so too do our bodies after hours of sleeping or you might say fasting,, need refueling. What type of fuel we use in the morning makes all the difference in whether our bodies race like a Ferrari or clank and ping like a beat up Ford Pinto..

If you are looking to provide a boost to your morning’s activities and you are generally healthy, a breakfast high in complex carbohydrates is what you need. Everyone knows food provides fuel for the human body. Our bodies use proteins, carbohydrates and fats as energy sources derived from the food we eat. Of the three, carbohydrates provide the quickest source of energy as it is digested quicker.

Simple carbohydrates found in things like candy, bread, honey, fruits, and whole milk process quickly, and do give you a boost in energy, but cause your blood sugar levels to spike. Consequently, after feeling a quick boost of energy your body will soon feel tired and sluggish. Complex carbohydrates on the other hand, found in foods such vegetables, whole grains, and skimmed milk, still provide an energy boost but digest a little slower and do not cause high blood sugar fluctuations.

Many nutrition experts now agree that a breakfast higher in complex carbohydrates combined with some protein will help reduce sugar spikes, and provide for short term and long term energy boosts throughout the day.
