Some say coffee is bad for health. Others say coffee is good for health. Who is then telling the truth ? The question should be what is in your coffee that makes it good or bad for your health.

Why Not all coffee are the same ?

How true is the information we hear from many people and read from many articles that in moderation coffee offer an adrenalin boost, stimulation and increase in alertness ?

Well, the truth is, it's difficult to know if it is good or bad for your health because you have to qualify what coffee are being talking about. It is true to say that SOME coffee are the same but to say that all coffee are the same is not actually correct. Why ? because NOT ALL COFFEE ARE THE SAME.

Generally, 25 years ago, you can say that coffee is bad for our health because it has acidic effect on our body that creates a lot of problems in our health. Even most energy drinks contain too much caffeine which you can see on the nutritional fact of the product. Some of these energy drinks were banned in some countries while there are others still remaining which you can drink at your own risk as per “warning” indicated on the product label.

On the stock market, Coffee is a 90 billion dollar industry but what is significant is that just in North America 85%+ drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee per day. Add to it the number of people who are consuming the so called “energy drink” which is also loaded with caffeine. A huge number of people are at RISK for many of the issues surrounding caffeine consumption.

Dangers of Caffeine

1. False energy boost
- According to a new study published in "Psychopharmacology," habitual coffee drinkers may not really be getting an energy boost from their morning ritual. The reason? Caffeine tolerance. Sixteen caffeine users were divided into two groups. One group drank about 20 ounces of strong coffee a day for three weeks, while the other group drank a placebo. The two groups were then switched. Measures of alertness or tiredness in both groups were identical.

2. Liver damage
- According to Jennifer Zartarian, N.D., the Wellness and Research Coordinator at Long Island College Hospital of Brooklyn explains, caffeine is broken down by the liver through the use of enzymes. The more these enzymes are involved in breaking down caffeine, the less available they are for breaking down other chemicals in the bloodstream.

3. Hallucinations
- According to a recent study reported by the BBC, students in the study who drank more than seven cups of instant coffee each day were three times more likely to hallucinate than people who drank one cup. "Any stimulant that you're overdosing on, such as seven cups a day, will stimulate hallucinations," explains Jacob Teitelbaum, M.D. and Medical Director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers.

4. Pregnancy issues
- The effect of caffeine on fertility and pregnancy has become a hot topic in research the past two years. "A recent study found that consuming more than 200 mg, or two cups, of drip coffee a day doubled the risk of miscarriage. Another study published in the British Medical Journal in November 2008 found that more than one cup or more than 100 mg of caffeine a day while pregnant resulted in a lower birth weight for the baby, which can be a marker for future health issues for the developing infant," Zartarian explains.

5. Sleep disruption
- "We should get eight hours of sleep every night," says Edward F. Group III, D.C., N.D., DACBN, of TheHolisticOption.com. When you combine stress, anxiety and coffee, the eight hours start dwindling and become easily interrupted. "Put coffee on top of that and you'll wake up during the night, wake up too early in the morning and experience insomnia." Dr. Group mentions the body heals itself at night, so additional coffee may disrupt this normal cycle.

Plus, a morning cup of java may interrupt your bodily cycle for the day. Zartarian explains, "We have a natural rise in cortisol in the morning to help us get out of bed and perform our daily tasks. However, if you are drinking coffee all day, then this cycle becomes disrupted, and your higher cortisol and adrenaline levels may interrupt a restful night of sleep."

6. Addictive qualities
- "When used at more than 12 ounces a day for energy, it becomes an energy 'loan shark,' crashing you later and taking more energy than it gives," says Dr. Teitelbaum.
In addition, excessive coffee intake in someone who already tends to have anxiety may trigger other problems. "It may cause palpitations, more anxiety, irritability, then rebound fatigue, depression and sleepiness once the effects of the caffeine wear off in usually three to three and a half hours," notes Zartarian.

7. Dehydration
- Caffeine is a mild diuretic, so while many people start their day with a cup of joe, they are already at a deficit as far as the six to eight glasses of water we need to stay hydrated each day. Drinking excess amounts of coffee, which has a laxative effect, can also aggravate irritable bowel syndrome. Plus, Zartarian notes it disrupts the minerals in your body. "Caffeine also promotes potassium depletion; the net effect being that the mineral balance in your body is disrupted."

8. Adrenal exhaustion
Feeling fatigued lately? It's no surprise: Coffee releases the "stress hormone" cortisol and adrenaline. Together, they help us respond to stress and provide us with energy and vitality throughout the day. "Heavy coffee drinkers secrete more cortisol and adrenaline than those without a coffee habit, which may ultimately result in fatigue of the adrenal gland. Adrenal fatigue is one of the most common culprits for the almost ubiquitous feeling of fatigue and exhaustion present in our friends, colleagues and family," says Zartarian.

9. Impairs the Nervous System.
- Coffee is a stimulant to the central nervous system. Drinking coffee inhibits the release of natural brain opiates (that make you feel good and counteracts pain). Women need all the natural brain opiates their bodies can muster up, especially around the menstrual period and not to mention childbirth (which is very painful due to the inordinate decrease of opiates in the modern American woman). Coffee may rev you up for a while, but is sure to bring down as well (making you crave more of it, after all, it is a drug, at least in the state that we use it today). Excessive consumption of coffee causes shaking and trembling of the hands due to nervousness. Coffee greatly impairs the nervous system.

10. Severe Blood Sugar Swings
- Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen into the blood stream. The pancreas responds to the sudden rise in blood sugar by releasing insulin, the hormone which causes excess carbohydrates to be stored as fat. Within the span of an hour or two, the result is a sharp blood sugar drop resulting in a state of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). That’s when you think it’s time for another cup of coffee and the whole cycle starts up again. Diabetics and hypoglycemic should avoid caffeine because it stimulates a temporary surge in blood sugar which is then followed by an overproduction of insulin that causes a blood sugar crash within hours. If you’re trying to loose weight, this rollercoaster will actually cause weight gain since insulin’s message to the body is to store excess sugar as fat.

11. Essential Mineral Depletion
- Caffeine prevents the absorption of some nutrients and causes the urinary excretion of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron and trace minerals, all essential elements necessary for good health leading to nutrional deficieny.

12. Male and Female Health Problems
- Male Health Problem: Caffeine is an irritant to the urinary tract and bladder. It is also a diuretic that aggravates conditions associated with frequent urination. Eliminating caffeine often relieves symptoms associated with frequent urination due to enlarged prostate glands. Dr. Milton Krisiloff, M.D. has found that in the majority of cases, men can significantly reduce their risk for urinary and prostate problems by making dietary changes which include eliminating coffee and caffeine. Female Health Issues: Female Health Problem: Fibrocystic breast disease, PMS, osteoporosis, infertility problems, miscarriage, low birth weight infants, and menopausal problems such as hot flashes are all exacerbated by caffeine consumption. Women on birth control pills are particularly at risk since they have a decreased ability to detoxify caffeine.
