The ears can keep themselves clean. There is no need for you to clean your ears. Read on to know the reasons why.

Cleaning your Ears - Do you have to?

You may feel the need to use a ear bud or a Q-tip to remove the wax inside your ears. The best thing to do is to leave the wax in your ears and not try to remove it by using a ear bud, Q-tip or any other object.

By cleaning your ears, you are not doing any good to your ears and may even end up harming them.

Functions of the Ear Wax

The skin on the outer part of the ear canal has glands that secrete ear wax. The ear wax is also known as cerumen..

The function of the ear wax is to protect the inside of the ears. The ear wax traps dust, germs and other foreign particles and prevent them from entering into the ears. The wax also helps to kill germs and prevent infections. Another function of the ear wax is to keep the ears waterproof.

As the ear wax accumulates into a small ball it dries up and rolls out of the ear canal and falls out of your ears. When you remove the ear wax you are exposing your ear to infections.

Functions of the Ear Drum

The ear drum at the end of the ear canal is very delicate. When you insert an object into the ear canal it can easily reach the ear drum because the ear canal is very short. Even a slight pressure on the ear drum by any object can rupture the ear drum and can cause hearing loss.

Another reason not to use any object to clean your ears is that when you use an object to remove ear wax you can end up pushing the wax up against the ear drum. This can cause ear pain and reduce clear hearing.

Here are some of the objects that are used to clean the ears - cotton swabs, tweezers, hairpins, pens, pencils, paper clips. All these objects can damage your ear drums and cause loss of hearing.

Facts about the Eardrum

The eardrum is a tiny flap of skin that is 10 millimetres in width. It is situated between the ear canal and middle ear.

The ear drum is extremely sensitive and detects vibrations and converts them into nerve impulses that are sent to the brain. It also helps to protect the middle ear from bacteria and foreign objects.

When the ear drum is ruptured it can lead to loss of hearing and infection of the middle ear.

The ears can keep themselves clean. Do not insert any object into your ears as it can lead to ear infections and loss of hearing.

You should never put cotton buds in your ear, it's just pushing the wax down further. Olive oil is best for cleaning ears.
