We live busy stressful lives and it is very sad when we have stress at work and come home and have it again. This has been the sum total of my life.

Stress on the job

You would think that two salaries coming into the home would ease much of the stress; after all, two paychecks are better than one. However, working stress is very high on the list of mental health issues which affect Montrealers these days. I have already written about stress in the workforce before.

Stress in the homelife

So imagine a family that doesn’t have only one stressed out spouse because of work, both of them have jobs and are stressed out. The head researcher of a new study on this very topic states,

"Given that a lack of support from one's spouse represents a major cause of both divorce and career derailment, this research is needed to address issues that affect both home and work… The number of employees who returned to the workplace even more agitated because they were unable to generate coping support at home is particularly distressing."

Support for stress

What is needed to keep families together is a good support plan. Here are some of the ways this can be accomplished.

  • Sharing household responsibilities
  • Giving each other space and time for relaxation
  • Not trying to best each other on who has the most demanding job
  • Not coming home with a litany of minor work complaints
  • Not looking for faults in the other partner with a microscope
  • Supporting each other’s bad day and empowering each spouse with positive affirmations.

If Montrealers try to follow these tips they might find that they can keep at least their home life as tranquil as possible.
